Planted in honour of Deryck Barkes

Explore our very own Heritage Woods here at Thorpe Farm Centre. Deryk Barkes, grandfather to the youngest generation of Barkes’, planted a number of woodlands on Thorpe Farm. He believed in giving back to the land that he worked on and earned a living from for most of his life. We believe that a continuation of this outlook and conservation needs to be continued with the current family.

In 2005, in memory of the late Deryck Barkes, the Barkes family decided to plant another woodland area, one that could be shared openly with the public. The idea of a community woodland was planted and began in partnership with the Forestry Commission. In March 2006 the first batch of 900 trees were planted in what marked the beginning of the community woodland. A further 1400 saplings were planted in the second phase of planting in March 2007.

Explore our family’s heritage in the very land itself.

    Woodland walks

    A peaceful haven

Nine species in all make up the community woodland of Heritage Woods here at Thorpe Farm Centre. Large trees such as oak and horse chestnut are planted towards the centre of the woodland along with the smaller field maples, wild cherries, rowan, and birch. Smaller tree species and shrubs have been planted around the perimeter of the wood to form ground cover for wildlife.

The new woodland is easily accessible from Thorpe Farm Centre via a new bridleway. The new woodland paths have spectacular views of the farm and upper Teesdale. Don’t forget to pause and soak up the vistas.

    The Heritage Wood Scheme

Be a part of this story

The Heritage Woods Scheme, which will be introduced in the near future, is designed for people to be able to dedicate a tree, which you sponsor, in memory or celebration of a loved one or event. You can also add a plaque with wording of up to 10 words to personalise the experience even more.
